  Research Area Description:

  Areas of study in the Computer Engineering fall into four main categories: analysis and design of

  systems. Example subtopics within each category follow.

  Analysis and design of integrated circuits: design verification; integrated circuit synthesis; model

  order reduction; and physical design of integrated circuits.

  Computer architecture: application-specific programmable processors; power-aware

  microarchitectures; reconfigurable architectures; and reliable high-performance processor design.

  High-performance and parallel computing: compilers and applications; high-performance storage

  and parallel I/O; and ultra-scale architectures and software.

  Embedded systems: embedded system synthesis; mobile, wireless, and ubiquitous computing;

  MSL students bring a variety of educational and professional backgrounds to the program; their diversity and perspectives enhance the learning experience for everyone. Students come with bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in a wide variety (over 40 different STEM majors represented!) of science, engineering, and technology fields.  Approximately 70% of MSL students have prior work experience in STEM fields.

  With an average age of about 30, but ranging from early to mid-20s and on up into their 40s (and even 50s), MSL students are culturally diverse, including students from all over the U.S. and the world.

  The MPM program requires the equivalent of a least one year of work experience for admission, but most applicants have two or more years of working experience. The ideal background for entry into the MPM program is a basic degree in engineering (most desirably civil, mechanical, or electrical) or architecture with a few years of work experience.   Northwestern University's Master of Fine Arts in Stage Design is one of the country’s outstanding graduate programs for the training of the visual stage artist. Through a uniquely structured curriculum, the program interacts with the Master of Fine Arts in Directing Program. A faculty of four full-time professional designers provides the program’s vision and guidance. Adjunct faculty from the Chicago professional theater community also teach in the program.

  Curriculum

  The MFA in stage design is a terminal degree program requiring twenty-seven academic units over nine quarters during a three-year residency. The MFA degree is granted upon completion of the program with a minimum grade point average of “B” and successful presentation of a design thesis portfolio. The portfolio must show clear evidence of mastery of the full range of graphic and conceptual support skills pertaining to the student's major area(s) of concentration and an acquisition of fundamental skills in the secondary design area(s).   The design faculty meets at the end of each quarter to discuss each of the program's students. The faculty evaluates each student's current artistic progress, academic standing, collaborative ability, and professional discipline. A member of the faculty communicates the results of these evaluations to each student. Unsatisfactory progress will result in a letter of warning, probation, or dismissal.

  At the end of the first and second years of study, each student is required to successfully present a portfolio of design and artwork to the faculty illustrating and articulating his/her development and vision as an artist and designer.
